FUGITIVE CHILD
FADE IN:
INT. ENTRYWAY – VICTORIAN STYLE HOME – ESTABLISHING DAY
SOFT FOCUS ON a blur of shapes and colors. As MAIN TITLES begin, the CAMERA wanders over several decorator objects placed about the living room, the objects delicate, aged, an aura of yesterday. The CAMERA settles on a fragile piece as the FOCUS SHARPENS; a crystal sculpture of a young girl holding a parasol. We HEAR the SOUND of THE FRONT DOOR OPENING . . .
Six-year old NICHOLE FLENNER walks through the doorway, in awe of the wondrous, magical things her daddy has hanging on the walls, placed on tables and crammed into every available nook and cranny. Lovely things . . . breakable things. She veers quickly for her favorite piece; the crystal girl spotlighted in a place of honor on top of the baby grand piano. She climbs on the bench, passes over the keys and never looks back. Reaching for the sculpture she hesitates; lessons on breakable objects were learned the hard way. MIKE FLENNER doesn’t give his daughter the chance to go for the object again, lifting her off the bench with a lighthearted laugh and swinging her around once before setting her on the ground. He helps her take off her coat and gloves, then plops down in his favorite chair, patting his lap for her to take a seat. Her smile fades, the innocent eyes betraying a burden of worry. Nicki glances around, looking for daddy’s new wife, MARIE. Marie’s left them alone again.
MIKE
(a hurt look)
Come here, Nikki, give your daddy a hug.
I’ve missed you . . .
(as she ventures toward
her father)
I see so little of you these days.
Nikki stands in front of her daddy, who helps her onto his lap, tenderly playing with a few tendrils of her blonde hair.
NIKKI
Daddy . . .
MIKE
What, baby?
NIKKI
(meekly, unable to formulate
her words)
I . . . love you . . .
MIKE
(a trace of a smile)
I love you, too.
INT. ELEGANT BEDROOM – WITH NIKKI’S MOM AND NEW BOYFRIEND – MORNING
LAURA FLENNER tosses in bed fitfully, rousing her boyfriend DEREK WELLS out of his sleep. He doesn’t seem to mind, reaching for her warm softness to start his day. Laura’s thoughts are far away, ignoring his loving attentions. Derek gazes at her, amused.
DEREK
Relax, Laura. You’ll win this one.
Laura sits up, swings her legs over the side of the bed and lights a cigarette.
LAURA
(edgy)
Of course I’ll win this one. Jerry’s got me
back on the hacker cases . . . domestic
squabbles, for Christ’s sake.
DEREK
A temporary setback. You’re a cornerstone
in that law office. Trust Jerry’s judgment.
When he feels you’re ready, you’ll be
breaking precedents faster than you
break our lunch dates.
LAURA
I’m ready now.
DEREK
(smiles, reaches for Laura)
I’m sure you are.
INT. LARGE, FAIRLY PACKED COURTROOM – AFTERNOON
Laura has MR. SAUNDERS on the stand, badgering him out of his cocky self-assuredness in front of his EX-WIFE, JUDGE and JURY. Mr. Saunders is a strapping, six-foot tall, middle-aged man. He wears an impeccable suit. The plaintiff is his petite, soon-to-be ex-wife. She sits demure and waif-like, cringing at her husband’s accusations.
LAURA
And you still contend, Mr. Saunders, that
your wife had you living in fear of your life?
MR. SAUNDERS
You bet your ass. I was afraid to do or say
anything to upset her.
LAURA
Because she would do what, Mr. Saunders?
Bruise your kneecaps?
DEFENSE ATTORNEY
Objection! Attorney is badgering the witness.
JUDGE
Sustained.
LAURA
Come on, Mr. Saunders; you would have us
believe that this woman, whom you outweigh
by two-hundred pounds, could seriously injure
anything but your ego?
MR. SAUNDERS
Believe it! Put a knife in her hand and she’d
raise my voice from tenor to soprano. She’s
tried it already. Hell of a place to have stitches.
INSERT – A CLOSE UP OF THE SOON-TO-BE EX MRS. SAUNDERS
Who hears the muffled snickers and smiles, in spite of herself.
RESUME SHOT
LAURA
Can you produce documentation on this
alleged attack?
MR. SAUNDERS
What, you want pictures?
LAURA
No, thank you. I just had lunch. No further
questions, your Honor.
Laura takes her seat beside her client while Mr. Saunder’s attorney takes over the line of questioning. As Laura listens, she’s given a note by a messenger, which she reads with mounting concern. She stands, interrupting the attorney.
LAURA
Your Honor, I’ve just been notified of an
emergency situation. May I prevail upon
the court for a short recess?
JUDGE
(looks at his watch)
It’s already 3:30. Court will adjourn and
reconvene at 9:00 tomorrow morning.
LAURA
(as the gavel comes down)
Thank you, your Honor.
Laura shoves her stack of paperwork in her case. People stir and get up to leave. The hum of activity intensifies as Laura mumbles something indiscernible to her client and hurries out of the courtroom.
EXT. PRESTIGIOUS-LOOKING DAY CARE CENTER - AFTERNOON
Laura’s BMW pulls into the parking lot, and she’s out of the car and into the building in a swift stride.
INT. DAY CARE CENTER
Laura stands outside Nikki’s classroom, watching through the glass window. The MANAGER of the center stands beside her. Nikki can be seen through the window, screaming as she’s restrained on a cot in the far corner by her TEACHER. Her teacher’s at her side with comforting words and a gentle back rub.
LAURA
What happened?
MANAGER
Nikki’s been moody all day. This episode
started when she was picked as a helper.
She flew into a rage . . . and hasn’t
stopped since.
Laura’s in a quandary. Something is happening to Nikki’s well-being . . . something she can’t put her finger on.
INT. NIKKI’S BEDROOM – DAY
Nikki sits on the chair at her desk and stares out the window. Her face is a wrathful mask as she hugs her knees and rocks herself. Laura sits on the bed, behind her, looking haggard . . . frustrated with her thwarted attempts to reach through to Nikki. Derek walks INTO frame, standing in silence at the bedroom entrance.
LAURA
Where do we go from here, Nikki? We
can’t pull a life together with you fighting
me at every turn.
Laura reaches out, touching Nikki’s shoulder. Nikki angrily pulls away from her touch.
LAURA
Nikki, it’s been months since your daddy
and I had to go our separate ways. Months
of tears and anger . . . we’ve gotta’ get
beyond it. We have Derek now . . .
Nikki springs from the chair and rushes out her door in a fury, knocking into Derek on the way out. Derek walks INTO the room, sitting quietly next to Laura.
LAURA
(distraught)
When I divorced Mike my life was thrown
on the floor, scattered about in pieces.
I’ve tried to fit them back together . . .
DEREK
But Nikki holds so many.
LAURA
She won’t let me see them, and she won’t
turn them over.
INT. FORMIDABLE OFFICE – DAY
An office gift-wrapped in rich wood, every decorative embellishment possible; carefully thought out with a woman in mind . . . a once uniquely successful woman who comes sweeping into the office and lays down her briefcase. Laura stares at her stack of messages with a frown. Her PERSONAL SECRETARY follows in on her heels.
SECRETARY
What’re you doing here?
LAURA
(distracted, but pleasant)
I work here.
SECRETARY
(a warm smile)
I remember. You remember your court
appointment . . .
(looks at her watch)
. . . ten minutes ago?
LAURA
Damn!
SECRETARY
Exactly! I called and left messages on your
machine, but you’d already left. I thought you
were headed for court.
(as Laura throws her paperwork
together)
You really ought to get a car phone.
LAURA
By the time I’m in my car I’m already on my
way.
(grins as she heads out the door)
If anyone calls, I’m on my way.
She’s out the door.
INT. DOWNTOWN COURTHOUSE – DALLAS – LATE AFTERNOON
The reception area is a mass of activity. Her recess running short, Laura stands impatiently at a pay phone, waiting for an answer at the other end.
INT. LAURA’S ENTRYWAY – A MOMENT LATER
We HEAR the TELEPHONE RINGING. The door opens and Nikki dashes in, running straight up the stairs to her bedroom. The CAMERA catches the fleeting blur of her face; the animosity and bitterness. Derek follows in, shutting the door. He hurries to answer the phone.
DEREK
Hello?
(listens)
No, we just got home. It was a long movie.
(looks up at the staircase)
Um, no, it didn’t go too well.
INSERT – LAURA AT THE COURTHOUSE
LAURA
(sighs)
I’d hoped you might be able to get her
to respond.
RESUME SHOT – WITH DEREK
DEREK
I did. It just wasn’t the response we were
looking for.
Derek listens to Laura’s questions for a beat.
DEREK
(a gentle voice)
I’d say she’s upstairs packing her toys to
run away.
WITH LAURA
LAURA
(a quick hopeless look at
the courtroom door)
I’ll be there in twenty minutes.
Laura hangs up, smacking the phone in frustration as she leaves.
INT LAURA’S KITCHEN - LATER THAT EVENING
Laura has Nikki seated across from her at the kitchen table. Derek’s left them alone.
LAURA
Do you understand what’s happening to us?
I can’t find the key to your anger, Nikki.
You won’t talk to me. So all we’re doing is
wearing each other down.
(emotional)
You have to heal, honey, before I can. I
dunno’, maybe your father can speed up
that process.
Nikki’s eyes fly up to meet her mother’s gaze. Derek walks in on the tail-end of the conversation.
DEREK
(alarmed)
Give Nikki to Mike?
LAURA
I’ve tried everything else!
NIKKI
NO, MOMMY!
LAURA
(at the snapping point)
What else can I do, baby? You’ve screamed
to the high heavens how much you hate me
and Derek. Your father doesn’t bring out
those feelings in you. I think you’d be happier
with him.
(softens as Nikki shakes her head
and the tears flow down her cheeks)
Let’s sleep on it tonight, ok? We’ll talk about
it tomorrow.
INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM – LATER THAT EVENING
Derek has again reached for Laura. This time she’s responded, clinging to him with urgency . . . a sense of desperation. Nikki’s shrieks startle them out of their clinch. Laura bolts out of bed just steps ahead of Derek.
INT. NIKKI’S BEDROOM
Nikki sobs as Laura picks her up and rocks her in her arms.
NIKKI
I wet the bed, mommy!
LAURA
(a soothing chant)
It’s ok, honey, it’s all right. We’ll change your
clothes, you can sleep with mommy. You just
had a bad dream.
NIKKI
It hurt!
LAURA
When you wet the bed?
Nikki nods, then buries her face in Laura’s shoulder.
LAURA
(carefully helps Nikki stand
and shed her wet clothes)
We’ll keep an eye on it. If it gets worse,
we’ll go see Dr. Carland.
NIKKI
(terrified)
NO!
LAURA
(shocked)
You like Dr. Carland.
NIKKI
He’ll hurt me!
LAURA
He’s never hurt you, honey.
NIKKI
He will! Just like . . .
LAURA
Just like WHO?
(watches Nikki shake her
head no)
Is someone hurting you? Who? Nikki, baby,
you’ve got to tell me! Someone at school?
Someone around here? Tell mommy, honey.
NIKKI
(a torrent of tears spilling out)
I . . . can’t! He’ll hurt you, too! He . . . he
said so!
LAURA
No one can hurt you or me with Derek here.
But you have to tell us so we can help each
other . . . who . . .
(Laura’s face drains of color)
Just like who, Nikki? Just like DADDY?
NIKKI
(barely heard through her sobs)
I’m sorry, mommy . . .
(her body twitches with
suffering)
I don’t want daddy! Please . . . don’t let
daddy take me . . .
Laura grabs her little girl in a desperate embrace, swallowing her in her arms as they crumble to the floor. Derek reels from shock, lucky there’s a wall close by to lean against. It makes sense to Laura now . . . it all fits together. Laura’s shock is dwarfed by her guilt. Why hadn’t she seen; the pieces were all there. If she hadn’t been so preoccupied with recapturing the shards of her life she could’ve fit Nikki’s pieces together and come up with the picture sooner.
INT. LOBBY OF A BUSY PEDIATRIC OFFICE – ESTABLISHING DAY
The CAMERA explores about the room, resting briefly on one child, then another. One little boy plays noisily with an older boy; a girl watches the television quietly, that telltale look of fever and illness putting a damper on her energy. Nikki’s screams are heard O.S., and the children in the lobby grow nervous and introspective.
INT. EXAMINING ROOM
Nikki sits on the edge of Dr. Carland’s examining table as Laura pulls Nikki’s shirt down over her head. Mom stops wiping Nikki’s tears away so she can wipe her own. Dr. Carland has left the room, allowing mom and one very frightened little girl to regain their composure. A SOFT KNOCK on the door and it opens. Derek walks in, shuts the door and walks to the table. For the first time Nikki bounds into his arms, weeping openly. Laura finds a weak smile through her tears, grateful that Derek and Nikki might start to make up for lost time. Derek gazes at Laura for a beat, returning a flicker of a smile, then turns to leave as he hugs Nikki tightly.
INT. DR. CARLAND’S PRIVATE OFFICE
The door is shut. Dr. Carland sits behind his desk. Laura opens the door and peeks her head in.
DR. CARLAND
Come in, Mrs. Flenner.
Laura walks into the office to sit down.
DR. CARLAND
Shut the door, will you please?
Laura complies, then takes a seat in front of his desk.
DR. CARLAND
I’m sorry, Mrs. Flenner. I’d sincerely hoped
my report would be more positive. You were
right in bringing her here. There’s strong
evidence of sexual abuse . . .
INSERT – A CLOSE UP OF LAURA
Hearing the words crumbles Laura’s self-control . . .
DR. CARLAND
There’s internal scarring . . . and she has no
hymenal ring left. The most important thing for
you to do is sever the child from whoever is
doing this to her.
LAURA
(finds her voice)
Her father. May I have a copy of your report?
DR. CARLAND
Of course. I have to turn this report in to the
authorities. I suggest you initiate whatever
steps necessary . . . as soon as possible. She
can’t take more of this. If it continues, she’ll
have to be hospitalized.
The CAMERA HOLDS on Laura’s distraught expression . . .
INT. PEDIATRIC LOBBY
Derek holds Nikki as he sits in the lobby. She’s balled herself up in his lap and dropped off to sleep from exhaustion. The aftermath of her emotional tantrum is still visible. Perspiration’s matted her hair against her face, and her body continues to twitch intermittently. Derek soothes her, even in sleep, with non-discernible whispers and hugs. The CAMERA CLOSES IN on the kaleidoscope of emotions etched on his face: pain and sympathy, woven together with the steel thread of anger.
INT. LAURA’S ENTRYWAY – DAY
We HEAR A KNOCK at the front door. When no one answers it, Mike hesitantly opens the door and steps inside . . .
MIKE
Hello?
Mike ventures further inside the apartment . . .
MIKE
Hello . . .
Derek and Laura appear around the corner. Mike flinches in aggravation at the sight of Derek.
MIKE
Still playing house, Laura, after all this time?
LAURA
That . . . is none of your business!
MIKE
The environment you give my daughter IS
my business.
LAURA
Let’s talk about that!
Mike’s eyes widen as Derek lunges, grabs him and shoves him outside. Laura follows, closing the front door behind her.
MIKE
WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING . . .
DEREK
SHUT UP!
(a choke-hold on Mike)
I’ve been up all night, trying to come up with
reasons why I shouldn’t kill you! Damned if I
could think of a one!
MIKE
WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM?
DEREK
NIKKI IS MY PROBLEM! What you’ve
been doing to her is MY PROBLEM!
MIKE
What’s she been telling you?
DEREK
Everything!
LAURA
As much as she can. Dr. Carland’s filled us
in on the rest!
MIKE
I . . . don’t know what you’re talking about.
DEREK
(tightens his hold on Mike)
Let me jog your memory. It’s called rape! If
it happens again . . . if you so much as lay a
finger or any other body part on her, I’ll
take those parts and shove them up your ass!
Mike is terrified briefly, then collects himself with an air of feigned outrage as he breaks free from Derek.
MIKE
You can take your threats and shove them
up YOUR ass!
(to Laura)
No pretentious diversion of yours is going to
give me orders!
LAURA
I have a judge to do that! Today I have to let
Nikki go; but come Monday I start proceedings
to get your visitation rights severed . . .
permanently! Touch her one more time before
then, and you won’t live long enough to regret it!
ANOTHER ANGLE – NIKKI AT THE WINDOW
Nikki’s pulled back the curtain, watching the volatile display outside.
LAURA (O.S.)
You make me sick!
MIKE (O.S.)
Save the melodramatics for the courtroom,
Laura. I stopped being impressed a long time
ago! Get Nikki out here . . . now!
Nikki’s eyes widen in terror. She releases the curtain and runs from the window.
INT. LAURA’S ENTRYWAY – MOMENTS LATER
Laura and Derek walk into the apartment, shutting the door in an attempt to drown out Nikki’s cries as her father takes her away. We HEAR Mike’s car SPEED AWAY in the background. Nikki’s gone; and the pain in their eyes sizes up the helplessness of the situation. Derek follows Laura into the kitchen . . .
INT. KITCHEN
Laura pours herself a cup of coffee and sits at the table. She picks up the cup; hands still trembling from the confrontation with Mike and her fear for Nikki. Derek timidly ventures an opinion.
DEREK
Mike won’t hurt her. He can’t afford to now
that his secret’s out.
LAURA
Mike knows many ways to inflict pain. He can
destroy Nikki without laying a hand on her.
Derek sits, silently watching Laura’s suffering. Nikki’s well-being is paramount, but something they have no control over at the moment. He CAN do something for Laura, though. He takes her by the hand and leads her to the couch where he can gather her in his arms.
INT. MIKE’S LIVING ROOM
Mike’s body throws a threatening shadow INTO FRAME that looms over Nikki’s small body, blocking her from the CAMERA. Only her face can be seen. The CAMERA holds on her frightened expression . . .
EXT. MIKE’S HOME
Laura and Derek stand at the entrance. Laura knocks severely on the front door . . .
LAURA
(yells through the door)
Weekend’s over, Mike. I want Nikki!
Silence stretches an eternity as they wait.
LAURA
NOW, DAMN IT!
INT. LAURA’S CAR
Derek drives while Laura holds Nikki. Nikki’s withdrawn, sullen.
LAURA
Are you ok, honey? Did daddy hurt you?
NIKKI
(whispers)
No.
LAURA
But . . . you were afraid.
(on Nikki’s hesitant nod)
Don’t let him scare you, baby. They’re
just words. Words can’t hurt you, unless
you let them.
Derek pulls into the parking lot of a large traveling carnival that’s been set up at a local shopping mall. Nikki sits up, her sorrows dissipating in her excitement.
DEREK
Surprise! I thought we’d end this day on a more
positive note.
Laura beams in unabashed adoration . . . the right thing to do at the right moment. How different he was from Mike.
LAURA
(heartfelt)
Thank you!
NIKKI
(scoots over to Derek and
hugs his neck)
Me too! Let’s go, ok?
They hop out of the car, revved for some fun, and race for the entrance.
WITH DEREK AND NIKKI – ON THE TWIRLING BOBSLED
Laura watches, cringing through her smile as Nikki clutches Derek in delight, on a ride Laura wouldn’t step a foot on. By last count she’d lost three meals on that one. A look of admiration settles on her face. Her little girl has collared a new found spunk and courage. Once again Derek’s intuition was right on target. Nikki is healing. They’re going to be ok. That realization, coupled with Nikki’s squeals of laughter dissolves the burden of worry from Laura’s face.
AT THE TARGET RANGE – WITH DEREK, LAURA AND NIKKI
Derek’s scored a crucial point. He sets down the gun.
BARKER
We have a winner! What’ll it be?
Nikki jumps up and down, pointing to a lovely doll in the corner.
DEREK
The little missus would like the doll.
The barker hands the doll to Nikki, who hugs it close as they turn to leave.
DEREK
Let’s see . . . at a dollar a pop, that means I
paid forty dollars for what, a ten-dollar doll?
LAURA
(a quick look at Nikki, who has a
tight hold on Derek’s hand)
Well worth the price.
They walk hand in hand; the picture of family togetherness.
INT. OFFICE – LAURA’S BOSS – WINDOWS ESTABLISHING- DAY
Laura sits across the desk from her boss, JERRY BURGESS, soliciting his well-heeled advice. The massive desk and surrounding office seem to engulf them.
JERRY
Laura, you’re the best in your field. But you’re
talking about the most difficult of cases, to
prove . . . to win. My advice? We track down
the best attorney. I’ve someone in mind. Let
him represent you. That in itself will be a
nightmare. Don’t add the burden of prosecuting
your own case. You’re not made of steel, Laura;
you can’t expect to remain impartial over the
subject matter.
LAURA
(nods, stands to leave)
Do it, then. Find the best and get them here
immediately!
INT. LAURA’S ENTRYWAY – DAY
Laura answers the front doorbell. An UNKNOWN MAN stands at the entrance.
LAURA
May I help you?
MAN
Laura Flenner?
LAURA
(suspicious)
Yes.
The man hands her a summons, turns and walks OUT of SHOT. Laura looks at the document briefly, then throws it down on the desk. Her desk holds the few remaining sculpture pieces she kept from her pre-divorce collection. She stares at the sculptures as she thinks on her plight; she lashes out at the crystal collection, sending the pieces crashing about the room in a fury. Derek runs into the room, stunned.
LAURA
(collects herself)
He’s beaten us to the punch!
(on Derek’s confused look)
He’s filed an action for custody of Nikki,
citing child abuse . . . at your hands!
DEREK
WHAT? HOW? How'd he beat us to it?
LAURA
(bitter)
He has friends in higher places than I do.
(plops onto the couch)
Smart move on his part. He’s muddied the
water. Now the issue isn’t has she been
abused, it’s by whom.
DEREK
Meaning?
LAURA
Meaning that by filing first, Mike’s put both of
us in a defensive position. We’ll bear the burden
of proof against his accusations.
Derek sits in silence next to Laura on the couch; hit like a ton of bricks.
INT. COURTROOM – DAY
Laura’s attorney is MR. CARTER. He has Mike Flenner on the stand, while Mike’s attorney, MR. LEESON, sits in tense expectation, scribbling notes.
MR. CARTER
Mr. Flenner, what led you to believe your
daughter was being abused?
MIKE
She told me.
MR. CARTER
When did she tell you?
MIKE
(uncomfortable)
About . . . four month’s ago.
MR. CARTER
And how long ago was it that you first
noticed something was wrong?
MIKE
It’s been building up for months.
MR. CARTER
Derek Wells has only known your ex-wife for
eight months. You’re saying Nikki began to
deteriorate shortly after that?
MIKE
Yes.
Mr. Carter returns to his briefcase, producing a document he hands to the judge’s clerk.
MR. CARTER
Please mark this for the jury. Exhibit A; the
findings of Dr. Carland, Nikki’s pediatrician,
concurred by two specialists in the field;
placing the date for portions of Nikki’s
internal scarring back more than a year!
INSERT – CLOSE UP OF LAURA AND DEREK
A hopeful smile at each other as we . . .
RESUME SHOT
MR. CARTER
Mr. Flenner, our records show you brought
your daughter in for an examination on
February 10, 1989. According to Dr.
Carland’s records, Nikki Flenner was brought
in by her mother more than a week earlier,
specifically to verify or negate her daughter’s
claims of sexual abuse . . . by you.
MR. LEESON
Objection! Heresay. I move that last statement be
stricken from the record.
MR. CARTER
It’s in Dr. Carland’s report, Mr. Leeson.
JUDGE
Sustained.
MR. CARTER
I’d just like to know why. Why’d it take nine
days from the day Laura Flenner sought
medical attention for Nikki, for you to do the
same? Wasn’t this calculated move a defensive
action, instigated in response to the
confrontation between you, your ex-wife and
Derek Wells?
MIKE
No! Absolutely not! I’ve no doubt Laura got
medical attention for Nikki the minute she
suspected something. I’ve also no doubt that
when her fears were confirmed, she concocted
this whole defense . . . anything to keep from
losing Nikki . . . but it’s not gonna’ work! I
want my daughter out of that environment and
away from that psychotic!
MR. CARTER
Objection, your Honor! Move to strike . . .
Derek flies out of his chair, requiring a forceful restraint from Mr. Carter.
DEREK
THAT ENVIRONMENT?! You’re the
psychotic here, you son-of-a-bitch!
JUDGE
Order! Mr. Wells, you’ll refrain from further
outbursts or you’ll be removed from the
courtroom!
Derek reluctantly sits down, glaring at Mike while mentally shredding every organ in his body.
INT. COURTROOM – LATER IN THE TRIAL
Mr. Leeson has called the SPECIALIST Mike hired to the stand.
MR. LEESON
Please expound on the scarring found inside
Nikki Flenner’s body; how accurate are the
claims made by Dr. Carland in respect to
when the scarring took place?
SPECIALIST
Dating the age of a scar inside the body is
about as accurate as carbon-dating rocks;
it’s all an estimate . . . one man’s opinion . . .
MR. CARTER
Objection! These findings are collaborated by
three specialists!
MR. LEESON
I’ll rephrase the question. Are you saying this
is all conjecture?
SPECIALIST
Yes I am. Most definitely.
MR. LEESON
(walks away, satisfied)
No further questions, your Honor.
INT. LAURA’S LIVING ROOM – THAT NIGHT
Laura and Derek lean back on the couch with their feet resting on the coffee table. Nikki sits between them as they watch television. Nikki’s lost the battle to stay awake, snoozing while propped against Derek’s side.
LAURA
It went well today, on the whole.
DEREK
It’d go better if you’d allow Nikki to testify.
LAURA
(plays with Nikki’s hair)
I can’t. She’s come too far. Her statement’s
on record.
DEREK
It’ll have to be enough.
Laura rises from the couch and turns off the television. Derek gently picks up Nikki and carries her to bed.
INT. COURTROOM – NEXT DAY
Mr. Leeson has Laura on the stand . . .
MR. LEESON
Mrs. Flenner, you’ve stated you began to
notice your daughter’s trauma months ago . . .
LAURA
Yes.
MR. LEESON
Did you even once consider Derek Wells?
LAURA
No.
MR. LEESON
Why not? Isn’t it your job as a concerned
parent to consider any possibility?
LAURA
Derek would NEVER lay a hand on Nikki.
He worships the ground she walks on!
MR. LEESON
(plays at being sympathetic)
He loves her.
LAURA
(defiant)
YES!
MR. LEESON
(back to contentious)
I’m not questioning that. I’m questioning how
much. Have you ever left Nikki alone with
Mr. Wells?
LAURA
He gets off work earlier than I do. He
picks her up from school and brings
her home.
MR. LEESON
After knowing the man for only two months,
you left him alone with your daughter every
weekday? For two hours? Three?
LAURA
I left them alone when I was assured . . .
MR. LEESON
Answer the question, Mrs. Flenner . . .
LAURA
Usually two hours or less.
MR. LEESON
A live-in babysitter. How convenient.
LAURA
(biting)
Is two months long enough to get to
know someone? I was married for
almost six years and had no idea
how disgusting that man is . . .
(points to Mike)
So when's long enough . . and who’re
YOU to say?
Mr. LEESON walks away, ignoring her comment.
INT. COURTROOM – LATER THAT AFTERNOON
Mr. Leeson rallies for his last verbal attack . . .
MR. LEESON
The prosecution calls Derek Wells to the
stand.
Derek is sworn in as the scene dissolves to Derek, in the middle of questioning.
MR. LEESON
Mr. Wells, are you aware of the fact that
children of abusers go on to become
abusers themselves?
MR. CARTER
Objection! Council is speaking in generalities!
He would have the jury believe that every child
who’s ever been abused becomes an abuser
themselves. That number is only a percentage.
JUDGE
Sustained.
MR. LEESON
Mr. Wells, tell us about your childhood.
Specifically, your relationship with your father.
DEREK
(caught off-guard)
It could’ve been better . . .
MR. LEESON
Could you be more specific?
DEREK
My father and I . . . didn’t get along.
MR. LEESON
Why was that?
DEREK
He was an alcoholic.
MR. LEESON
Did he ever hurt you?
DEREK
(lowers his eyes)
Yes.
MR. LEESON
And did you ever hurt him? Ever?
DEREK
(his voice faltering)
Yes. He was hurting my mother.
MR. LEESON
Mr. Flenner testified earlier that when
he confronted you with Nikki’s claims,
you turned violent; grabbed him in a choke-
hold and hurled threats. Would you deny this?
DEREK
He was hurting someone I love!
MR. LEESON
Yourself, Mr. Wells. And so history repeats
itself . . . He was threatening to hurt you by
exposing you for what you are!
MR. CARTER
OBJECTION! Council is badgering the
witness!
MR. LEESON
No further questions, your Honor.
INT. LAURA’S BEDROOM – THAT NIGHT
Laura’s balled up her pillow under her chin, pondering the day’s events as she stares at the headboard. Derek lies beside her, on his back, lost in his own thoughts.
LAURA
It’s not your fault, Derek. You did the only
thing you knew to do at the time.
(Derek shakes his head)
You saved your mother’s life! No matter
how much Mr. Leeson perverts the truth, he
can’t take that away from you.
DEREK
Maybe not. But he can take Nikki away
from you.
That thought has never left Laura’s mind, as her look confirms.
INT. COURTROOM – NEXT DAY
Mr. Carter’s making his closing statements to the jury.
MR. CARTER
My client found her child trapped in a life
or death situation; raped, sodomized at
the hands of her own father. Confronted
by Nikki’s accusations, Mr. Flenner flew into
action, in an attempt to divert attention from
himself to a wrongly accused Derek Wells.
Mr. Wells’ past is not uncommon. Chances
are you’re sitting next to someone with the
same background. Would you condemn
each other? Then why condemn Derek Wells,
and through him, Laura Flenner?
Mr. Carter pauses, allowing the jury to digest all he has said.
MR. CARTER
Weigh carefully what three specialists have
said . . . what Nikki Flenner herself has said
in her statement. Then . . . follow your heart
to the right decision . . . a decision severing
Mike Flenner’s rights, and reinstating full
custody of Nikki Flenner to her mother; the
only parent Nikki cleaves to for a way out
of her torment. Mr. Flenner may have jumped
the gun and filed charges first; it's a known
fact he's well connected in legal circles, but he
isn't above the law! Consider carefully the best
interests of the child. Nothing less than her very
life is at stake. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen.
Mr. Carter sits as Mr. Leeson stands to face the jury.
MR. LEESON
(approaches the bench)
A very eloquent speech, ladies and gentlemen.
Speeches can’t sway facts. We’ve heard that
Nikki Flenner’s pointed the finger at her father
in her statement. Why a statement, instead of
allowing her to testify? Is her mother’s only
motivation to protect her daughter, or herself?
Putting a child on the stand makes it easy to
spot if that child’s been coerced.
Another speech pertained to Mr. Well’s troubled
youth. Tragic, yes, but the facts bear out that
Mr. Wells’ volatile personality still smolders . . .
striking out at Mr. Flenner, and his daughter.
I ask that you think on the facts, not the im-
passioned speeches. Three specialists came up
with mere estimates. Those aren’t facts. Taking
into account only the facts is the only way true
justice can prevail for Nicki Flenner. Thank
you, ladies and gentlemen.
THE COURTROOM – LATER IN THE PROCEEDING
A verdict’s been reached. The SPOKESMAN for the jury reads their decision . . .
SPOKESMAN
We, the jury, find for the plaintiff, Mr. Flenner,
and ask the court that he be granted full custody
of his daughter, Nikki Flenner.
ANOTHER ANGLE – A CLOSE-UP OF LAURA FLENNER
The CAMERA CLOSES IN on her face as the verdict’s read. Laura’s life crumbles in around her in a few short sentences . . .
SPOKESMAN
The jury concurs that the seriousness of this
case warrants swift action, and requests that
all visitation rights between Laura Flenner and
her daughter be terminated, effective immediately,
until such time that she can prove to the court’s
satisfaction that she has broken all contact with
Derek Wells, whom we believe warrants further
investigation.
ANOTHER ANGLE – THE COURTROOM
The judge has pronounced the case dismissed. The courtroom is suddenly a hum of activity . . . everyone talking at once as Laura stands and locks her eyes on Mike. Mike is celebrating, shaking everyone’s hand within reach, a broad smile of triumph until he zeroes in on Laura’s look of hatred. He’s taken aback, realizing all-too-plainly that Laura has no intention of giving up her fight. It shows in her eyes as she stalks out of the courtroom with Derek at her side.
INT. NIKKI’S BEDROOM – WINDOWS ESTABLISHING NIGHT
Laura and Derek stand in silence at the door to Nikki’s bedroom, watching her sleep. Derek shakes his head, still in a state of denial.
DEREK
How’d that son-of-a-bitch do it?
LAURA
Like I said; Mike knows people in higher
places than I do. And he loves to grandstand.
He’s the one who called for a jury, to turn it
into a three-ring circus.
(wipes away her tears)
I . . . promised I’d stop her pain . . . asked her
to trust me. Yet in two days I turn her over to
her attacker with what, an apology? How can
that begin to be enough?
Derek wraps his arm around Laura’s neck, leading her down the hall.
DEREK
That three-ring circus has also focused too
much attention on Mike. He won’t dare hurt
her again. Nikki will survive . . . and she’ll
come to understand someday that you did all
you could.
LAURA
(they’ve reached their bedroom)
Well, obviously it wasn’t enough, was it?
EXT. NIKKI’S DAYCARE CENTER – ESTABLISHING – DAY
Laura parks the car and walks with Nikki towards the front entrance. Out of the corner of her eye she recognizes a car parked conspicuously in her line of sight. Mike sits behind the wheel . . . waiting; boldly intimidating Laura. She says nothing to Nikki as they walk in the front door.
INT. NIKKI’S CLASSROOM
Nikki’s eager to get back to her familiar routine. She’s unaware of the tense discussion nearby between Laura and the teacher.
LAURA
I've GOT to be the one to pick up my
daughter today!
TEACHER
What about Mr. Flenner? He has
authorization. So does Derek Wells.
LAURA
Things change. My ex-husband's parked
outside right now . . . waiting. Nikki says
he's been abusing her. I don't want him
near her, understand?
TEACHER
(shocked and sympathetic)
Yes, of course.
LAURA
He makes one move inside this building
call the police . . . then call me.
TEACHER
I will.
Laura kisses Nikki good-bye and walks OUT the door.
EXT. DAYCARE CENTER
Laura gathers her composure and heads for Mike's car . . .
LAURA
(hard as nails)
Cut through the crap and mudslinging, and
what it comes down to is that you know, I
know . . . and more importantly Nikki
knows who's been abusing her, you son-
of-a-bitch! I have Nikki until Wednesday
morning. Stay out of my sight until then!
MIKE
I'm just makin' sure that come Wednesday
Nikki'll still be around. For some puzzling
reason I don't trust you . . . or your
intentions where Nikki's concerned.
LAURA
Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. One
minute before that, and you'll find yourself
puzzling over how you landed in
intensive care!
MIKE
You've been hangin' around that boyfriend
of yours too long. Speaking of which, are
you going to evict the sponge, so you can
get your visitation rights reinstated?
(on Laura's silent glare)
Pretty tough decision, huh? I find it personally
gratifying to have the shoe on the other foot,
for a change. Take good care of Nikki for
me. I wouldn't want anything to happen
to her. I'll be watching to make sure.
Mike speeds OUT of FRAME, leaving Laura reeling in emotional despair. Numb, Laura walks back to her car and gets in, closing the door. She stares off into space for a beat, then rests her head on the steering wheel as the indignant tears flow.
EXT. HIGH-RISE CONSTRUCTION SITE - DAY
Derek sits eating his lunch on a girder while on break. He puts down his sandwich, reaches into his pocket and pulls out his wallet, flipping it open to a family picture of Laura, Nikki and himself. He stares at it blankly. Derek's father, BRYAN WELLS, sits down beside him. He works for the same construction company. When Derek doesn't acknowledge his presence, he leans over for a look at the picture. Derek responds by stuffing the wallet back in his pocket.
BRYAN WELLS
Hello, son. How's the fight going?
DEREK
It isn't. We lost. You wanna' know why?
(throws his sandwich off the
ledge)
Because of me. Our family skeletons were
paraded in front of the court. The jury
decided as long as Laura's with me, she's
unfit to take care of Nikki.
BRYAN WELLS
I'm so sorry, son.
DEREK
Where have I heard that before? Tell
it to Nikki; I'm sure she'll understand.
BRYAN WELLS
Derek, please; don't bring up the past. Let
it stay buried.
DEREK
Funny thing about our past: You cut it out
like a cancer and it comes right back--
stronger than ever-- destroying everything
it touches. So, now it starts . . .
BRYAN WELLS
What?
DEREK
I'm losing everything . . . again.
BRYAN WELLS
Not everything. You'll still have Laura,
won't you?
DEREK
I know Laura. She'll never accept the
court's decision.
BRYAN WELLS
She has no alternative.
DEREK
She'll make one.
(stands to walk away)
And it won't include me.
INT. LAURA'S LIVING ROOM - WINDOWS ESTABLISHING - NIGHT
Laura sneaks a look through the window curtains in her living room. Derek walks up behind her and takes a curious look himself. Nikki sits contentedly on the couch as she watches television.
INSERT - SHOT OF THE STREET OUTSIDE HER WINDOW
Mike's car is parked on the street.
RESUME SHOT
DEREK
(under his breath)
Bastard. Hasn't he got anything better to
do?
LAURA
He was at Nikki's school today . . .
DEREK
That's it! I'm going out there and kickin'
the shit out of that jackass . . .
LAURA
(turns, grabs his arm)
No, Derek! That's just what he wants.
Mike has that judge in his hip pocket.
You'll only pour salt on the wound.
(grief-stricken)
I'm surviving. Don't go out there and
destroy your life for me. It'll push me over
the edge.
DEREK
He doesn't deserve to . . .
LAURA
(interrupts him before
he can finish)
You DO. Let it be.
Derek pegs her with a thoughtful gaze, unconvinced.
EXT. MIKE'S HOME - ESTABLISHING DAY
Laura walks to the front entrance, pulls her resolve together and knocks on the door. As she expected, Marie answers the door. Recognizing Laura, Marie tries to slam the door, but Laura counters, pushing her way into a confrontation.
INT. MARIE'S LIVING ROOM
Laura walks to the couch and sets down her coat . . .
MARIE
Don't get comfortable. You won't be
staying.
Laura picks up her coat and holds it while facing Marie.
LAURA
I haven't come here to dispute the judge's
decision, or preach . . . or lay blame . . .
MARIE
Well, that restricts your subject matter.
LAURA
I'm here about the future. Not just Nikki's,
but yours as well. Please take this word of
warning, from someone who knows. You've
been spared Mike's wrath up to now, because
he's found another way to channel it. But
it won't be enough.
MARIE
What's your point?
Laura walks to the baby grand piano, gently touching the crystal figurine of the girl with the parasol.
LAURA
(quietly; her back to Marie)
Nikki's favorite.
Laura is silent a moment as Marie's impatience grows. When Laura turns around, she has to blink back the tears.
LAURA
Keep your eyes open, Marie. Mike has
fine qualities that mislead even the most die-
hard critics. But it's a disguise.
Laura walks solemnly to the front door, but turns back around a last time.
LAURA
You'll find that out. When you do . . . RUN.
and take Nikki with you. In a fit of rage,
there's no telling what he could do to her.
MARIE
Your scare tactics won't work. I love my
husband. And I trust him explicitly. I've
NEVER seen him be abusive with Nikki . . .
LAURA
(as Marie hustles her out
the door)
He wouldn't sell tickets . . .
(Marie has her outside,
ready to shut the door)
Trust me, Marie, you'll be in on it soon . . .
(Marie slams the door)
. . . enough.
Laura turns and faces the CAMERA as she fights to keep herself together.
ANOTHER ANGLE - THE STREET IN FRONT OF MIKE'S HOUSE
Mike's car cruises down the street. Seeing Laura he steps on it, careening around the corner into his driveway. Laura has made a hasty retreat to her car and now speeds off, too emotionally drained to handle another fiery incident. Mike tears out across the lawn in chase, but doesn't come close to catching her. Fury contorts his face as he storms into the house.
INT. MIKE'S LIVING ROOM - DAY
Marie's worried gaze deepens as Mike erupts in a black rage . . .
MARIE
She was only here for a minute . . .
pleading her case . . .
MIKE
AND YOU LET HER IN?
MARIE
She has a way of getting what she wants . . .
MIKE
Not THIS TIME! Hear me, Marie; I
won't tolerate that bitch in my house
again! She lost all rights to Nikki, so
she has NO BUSINESS pokin' her nose
around here. NONE!
Mike swaggers for the kitchen, in a fit of ill temper.
EXT. LOCAL GAS STATION - DAY
Laura's car pulls INTO frame, headed for the full-serve pumps. She slows, deliberating, veering instead to the self-serve pumps.
ANOTHER ANGLE - EXT. CAR
Laura fumbles for a beat with the pump, but gets down to business in no time.
GROCERY CHECK-OUT LINE - CLOSE UP OF CONVEYOR BELT
Groceries are carried ACROSS frame; such things as bread, lunch meats, everything needed for living out of your car. Laura passes in front of the CAMERA to stand in front of the clerk, with two fifty-dollar bills in hand.
INT. NIKKI'S ROOM - DAY
Laura throws together as many of Nikki's clothes as she can fit in a good-sized suitcase. The CAMERA follows her arms from drawer to drawer, to closet as she picks through the garments.
INT. LAURA'S BEDROOM - AT HER DESK
Laura sits quietly, collecting her thoughts to put into a difficult letter. She pauses as she wipes her eyes and broods over the exact message she needs to express.
INT. LAURA'S ENTRYWAY - DAY
Laura sets several blankets and two pillows down on the table by the front door and checks for the all-clear out the window. The CAMERA focuses in on the stack of blankets as Laura walks ACROSS frame, headed back for the bedroom. On the way she stops in front of the table and sets the note in front of a vase where Derek will find it.
FRONT ENTRYWAY - CLOSE UP OF BLANKETS
The stack by the front door has grown to include two suitcases, the blankets and pillows, an overnight bag and miscellaneous grocery bags filled with unknown items. The front door opens and Laura and Nikki walk in, having just picked up Nikki from school. Nikki's eyes dilate in surprise and confusion.
NIKKI
Is this what you wanted to talk about?
Laura again checks the front window.
LAURA
Yes, honey.
(turns her thoughts to Nikki)
Come sit by mommy.
(they sit on the couch;
Laura holds Nikki's hand)
I told you I'd never let your Daddy hurt you
again.
Nikki flinches as she nods, suddenly alarmed over the subject matter.
LAURA
I intend to keep that promise. But to do
it, you and I have to leave tonight. Run away.
NIKKI
(whimpers)
Why?
LAURA
Because your Daddy's tricked people
into believing that Uncle Derek and I are
the ones hurting you. If we don't leave
tonight, tomorrow they'll take you away
from me . . . give you to Daddy.
NIKKI
NO! YOU PROMISED!
Laura embraces Nikki tightly, softly reassuring her.
LAURA
We're not gonna' let that happen.
That's why we're leaving.
NIKKI
What about Uncle Derek?
LAURA
He . . . can't come, baby.
(as Nikki's mouth drops
open)
Our life's going to be a hard one, Nikki.
We'll have each other, but that's about all.
Daddy'll have people looking for us, to
bring us back here, so we'll have to keep
running. Derek has a good life here;
family and friends. It would be very
wrong for us to ask him to leave all that.
NIKKI
I love Uncle Derek. He won't want us
to go without him.
LAURA
I know he won't. That's why we're not
telling him. I've written him a letter. He'll
get it after we've gone.
The CAMERA lingers on Nikki's crushed expression . . .
INT. LAURA'S CAR - NIGHT
The doors open and Nikki and Laura climb in. Laura throws the last bag over the front seat and drops it on top of the pile in the back. They shut their doors and look at each other in silence.
LAURA
Are you ready, honey?
Nikki nods weakly. She leans over the front seat, scanning her eyes over the supplies stuffed up to the rear window.
NIKKI
Where's Lauralee?
LAURA
Lauralee?
NIKKI
The doll Uncle Derek won for me!
LAURA
(sighs, throws her head back)
Jesus, I forgot it.
NIKKI
Mommy, I want it!
LAURA
I know you do, baby . . .
NIKKI
Uncle Derek gave me Lauralee!
Don't leave it, Mommy, please!
LAURA
Ok. Lay down in the seat. Stay there
and don't move until I get back,
understand?
Nikki nods. Laura looks around, gets out of the car and motions for Nikki to lay down as she shuts the door. When Nikki's complied Laura turns and hurries into the house.
EXT. LAURA'S CAR - MOMENTS LATER
Laura rushes to the car . . .
ANOTHER ANGLE - LAURA
Who slows down, with a look of worry as she approaches . . .
ANOTHER ANGLE - EXT. CAR
Something's wrong. She senses it. As Laura draws near, there's no sign of Nikki. There wouldn't be, if Nikki was doing as she'd been told . . . but logic is secondary to irrational fear.
WITH LAURA
Laura looks around nervously. Her eyes widen in apprehension.
ANOTHER ANGLE - DOWN THE STREET
The vague outline of a car. It's parked over a hundred yards down the street, but looks hauntingly familiar. Laura sucks in a gasp of air involuntarily, quickening her step to the car. She throws open her door . . .
ANOTHER ANGLE - INT. CAR
Nikki looks up at her mother with hopeful eyes, and seeing her doll jerks up with the most joyful smile her mom can remember seeing on the small face in a long time. Laura jumps in with a sigh of relief. Handing Nikki her doll, Laura guns the engine, anxious to be on the road. She pulls out of the driveway, backing onto the road. As she stops to put the gearshift in drive, Derek drives up and stops his car alongside Laura's, who's headed in the opposite direction. They have the road blocked-off momentarily as their windows open, just inches apart. Derek's put it all together, as evidenced by the sudden dread on his face. Laura throws a hasty look at Nikki. Nikki hasn't noticed him there. She's too wrapped up in her doll . . . Derek opens his mouth, but Laura quickly raises a finger to her lips, motioning him to sshh, then nods slightly in Nikki's direction. She takes notice of something in her rear-view mirror . . .
ANOTHER ANGLE - BEHIND LAURA'S CAR
Mike's car is headed right for her . . .
ANOTHER ANGLE - WITH LAURA AND DEREK
Derek averts his gaze from Laura to the road for a beat, and sees Mike's fast approach. A fleeting look of deep regret passes between them . . . so much left unfinished. Then Laura's gone, peeling out to get ahead of Mike. Mike tromps on his pedal, but Derek cuts him off by swerving his car and crashing into him. Mike leaps out of his car and charges Derek, but Derek's door is locked. He bangs on the window . . .
MIKE
Get out of the car, you spineless cretin!
You're history in this town, you hear me?
Your word won't be worth a cup of coffee!
DEREK
(jumps out of the car)
Then I've got nothin' to lose by poundin'
the shit out of you!
Derek and Mike engage each other in a violent confrontation. Derek has incredible strength and resolve, but isn't prepared for Mike's self-defense skills. Derek holds his own through several of Mike's well-placed kicks and blows; and one head-butt to Mike's abdomen looks like it'll turn the course of the fight, but Mike rears up from his doubled-over position and lands a cruel kick to Derek's groin. Mike leaves him moaning on the ground, leaps in Derek's car and takes off after Laura.
EXT. LAURA'S CAR - NIGHT
The weary travelers pull in a roadside rest stop in the late hours of the evening, parking the car close to the restroom.
ANOTHER ANGLE - INT. CAR
Laura stops the car and cuts the engine. Nikki's still awake, too keyed-up on their new adventure to sleep.
LAURA
Make it quick, honey.
NIKKI
Can we stop soon? I'm getting sleepy.
LAURA
You can sleep in the car. I'll make you a
nice bed in the back seat.
NIKKI
What about you?
LAURA
I'm getting us out of this state . . . tonight.
Go on, hon.
Nikki gets out of the car and hurries for the restroom while Laura starts rearranging things in the back seat.
INT. DEREK'S CAR - DAYBREAK
Mike's been driving all night. His eyes are bloodshot from the strain. Rubbing his eyes with a free hand, he almost misses Laura's car parked in a small motel's parking lot. He sees it out of the corner of his eye and steers the car into the next parking space. He gets out and looks at the number painted on the curb in front of Laura's car. She's in Room 8. He knocks urgently on the door, then steps away from the peep-hole.
INT. LAURA'S MOTEL ROOM
Laura and Nikki jerk awake, seized in an immediate panic. She grabs Nikki and shuffles her into the bathroom.
LAURA
Shut the door! Stay in there!
Nikki obeys and Laura heads for the front door; stopping to look out the window-- a move Mike's counting on.
ANOTHER ANGLE - THROUGH THE WINDOW CURTAIN
Derek's car is seen parked next to Laura's.
A CLOSE UP OF LAURA
Immensely relieved, she looks back at the bathroom . . .
LAURA
It's Derek!
The bathroom door opens as Laura moves to open the front door. At the last instant Laura decides to play it safe by latching the door chain. She opens the door cautiously.
LAURA
Derek?
Mike lunges at the door and Laura screams. Nikki flees back into the bathroom. Mike's force has snapped the chain, but in the second it takes him to regroup for a final lunge Laura beats him to it and slams the door shut, fumbling for the lock.
MIKE (O.S.)
DAMN YOU, LAURA . . . OPEN UP!
Laura grabs what she can; her purse, keys, Nikki's doll . . . and races for the bathroom door. It's locked.
LAURA
(an intense whisper)
NIKKI; quick, open up for Mommy!
The door unlocks and Laura rushes in. She locks the door behind her just as Mike breaks the lock on the front door. He runs to the bathroom door and lunges at it . . .
INT. BATHROOM
Laura helps Nikki out the bathroom window, then squeezes herself out. As Mike cripples the door Laura reaches back one last time to retrieve the few items she escaped with. We HEAR Mike's body FALL AGAINST the door. Seconds later Mike breaks through. He sees the window, spins around and runs to the front door, throwing it open. He stops short. A large ice machine's been moved in front of it, blocking off his exit. He looks out the window. Through the window we see Mike's hood up, and Laura jumping in her car while holding Mike's distributor-cap wires. Mike reaches for a chair and crashes it against the window, breaking it. A hefty LOCAL MAN waves good-bye to Laura as she speeds off, having helped her with the ice-machine and wires. He hears the window break and legs it around the corner. Mike clears out the glass debris and jumps out the window, rushing for his car. One quick look tells him it's useless. Another look tells him the man's disappeared. He slams down the hood, hitting the top of it angrily with his fist.
INT. LAURA'S BEDROOM - NEXT MORNING
Derek has his suitcases out, packing his things as quickly as he can. One side of his face is swollen from the fight, and he moves stiffly as he stops packing and sits down on the side of the bed, poring over the letter Laura left him. After a beat, he angrily wads it up and pitches it in the wastebasket. For a long moment he sits in silence, then stands, moving towards the wastebasket. He retrieves the letter and tenderly presses out the wrinkles. Satisfied with the results, he folds the letter and puts it in his shirt pocket. We HEAR a KNOCK at the front door.
ANOTHER ANGLE - FRONT DOOR
Derek opens the door to find the DRIVER of a tow-truck in front of him, presenting him with a whopping bill and the dilapidated remains of his car in tow.
DRIVER
I was told you're responsible for this bill.
Derek grabs the bill, and recoils over the amount. The car's pick-up point is written down and Derek sees it, flying into action. A starting point to find Laura! He grabs his suitcase and moves for the door.
DEREK
My car was stolen! I'm going after
the guy right now. I'll have him give you
a call . . . you can do lunch.
Derek shoots by the stunned man at the door.
DRIVER
HEY!
Derek spins around after getting a good look at his car.
DEREK
(a sheepish grin)
So, does this thing even run, or what?
INT. LAURA'S CAR - EARLY MORNING
Laura passes through an unknown, sleepy little town, just as locals are beginning to stir. She passes by a police car parked along a side street, and notices the hard look he's giving her. She sets her jaw in determination, preparing for the worst.
ANOTHER ANGLE - POLICE CAR FROM REAR-VIEW MIRROR P.O.V.
The police car slides out onto the road and pulls up behind Laura. She can feel herself losing control as she watches the rear-view mirror. She checks the back seat quickly. Nikki's still asleep. Another look in the rear-view mirror. The car follows leisurely behind, no flashing lights or sirens. The car turns off, leaving Laura rattled, but grateful.
EXT. SIDE STREET - MID-MORNING
Laura has parked the car and is stuffing all the provisions she can into the trunk, cleaning out the back seat . . .
EXT. SMALL CAR DEALERSHIP - DAY
Laura pulls into the dealership and parks the car.
EXT. LOT - DAY
Laura, Nikki and a SALESMAN peruse the lot, looking for a suitable car. The salesman is a Grandpa Walton type, kind and genuinely interested in what's best for Laura.
SALESMAN
If you want something really reliable, I'd
at least take a look at the new cars. I have an
inventory of gently-used vehicles, but none of
them have been so gently used.
LAURA
Thanks for your honesty. Show me your best
value for my money.
EXT. LOT - AT LAURA'S CAR
SALESMAN
(looks at Laura's car)
This is the car you want to trade in?
LAURA
Yes. I'll pay the difference in cash.
The salesman opens the door, looking at the mileage and general condition of the interior. He scans the back seat. It's been emptied, for the most part.
SALESMAN
How's she run?
LAURA
(nervous)
Good.
SALESMAN
(sighting in on her nervousness)
Mam, this car isn't stolen, is it?
LAURA
(shocked)
No. It's mine.
SALESMAN
Sorry. I thought so, but I had to ask.
LAURA
Look. I need a new car . . . because I
need to get rid of this one. It's my car, I
didn't steal it. But I can't tell you any more
than that.
The salesman gives Laura and Nikki a long, thoughtful look.
EXT. CAR LOT - LATER THAT MORNING
Laura and Nikki drive off the lot with a new Camero.
EXT. MOTEL - NIGHT
The motel is a quaint, mom and pop operation, off the main highway. Laura's new car is parked outside one of the rooms.
INT. MOTEL ROOM - WINDOWS ESTABLISHING - NIGHT
Laura stands at the window, looking through the curtains; a habit that's becoming second nature. Nikki dances out of the bathroom, bundled in a towel. She jumps on the bed . . .
NIKKI
Where are we?
LAURA
Shreveport, Louisiana.
NIKKI
We goin' to stay here?
LAURA
Just until tomorrow.
NIKKI
Then where're we goin'?
LAURA
Further away from Daddy.
NIKKI
There's a park here. Can I play some
before we leave?
LAURA
(drops the curtain, turns
to face Nikki)
We need to keep moving . . .
NIKKI
(whining)
Just a little while? Please, mommy?
LAURA
(takes a deep breath)
We'll see.
INT. LAURA'S CAR - DAY
Laura and Nikki cruise through town on their way to the park. Nikki sees it first and points to the left. Laura looks, failing to notice Derek's crunched car as it passes her on the street, headed in the opposite direction. Derek looks at the new Camero, but it doesn't register . . . for a few seconds. He looks with a puzzled frown in his rear-view mirror, dismissing the thought he'd caught a glimpse of Laura as no more than edginess.
INT. DEREK'S CAR
Derek's driven down the road a few miles and sees Laura's old car up for sale on the car lot. He veers in.
EXT. PARK - DAY
Laura's uneasy as she sits on a bench, watching Nikki play nearby. The park's crowded; an intimidating scene for Laura, who stares at the strangers intently. Laura's distracted from her vigil by a YOUNG MAN who sits beside her on the bench. Laura tenses, trusting no one.
MAN
Crowded today.
LAURA
(curt)
Yes.
MAN
I've never seen you here before.
LAURA
Just passing through.
MAN
(smiles warmly)
A shame.
In the background Nikki can be seen walking towards her mom. She stops and waves. Laura frowns in the man's direction as she waves back. Nikki heads for a swing.
MAN
Pretty little girl.
LAURA
(strained)
Thank you.
EXT. DEALERSHIP LOT
Derek's cornered the salesman who helped Laura.
DEREK
(points to Laura's car)
The woman who traded in that car . . . it's
very important I find her!
SALESMAN
I'm sorry, I can't give out that information.
Policy.
DEREK
What policy?
SALESMAN
MY policy. When I see a woman runnin'
scared like that, I can only assume someone
like yourself is out to make trouble.
DEREK
(desperate)
No, it's not like that! We're engaged to
be married! She's running from her ex-hus . . .
SALESMAN
(breaks in)
Save your breath. I got explicit instructions
from the lady. As far as I'm concerned, she
never existed.
Derek opens his mouth in further rebuttal, but suddenly remembers the sense of recognition he felt at the park. He races for his car.
EXT. PARK - A MOMENT LATER
A YOUNG BOY runs up to the man and gives him a hug. Laura's relief is noticeable.
LAURA
Handsome little boy.
MAN
Thanks. I kinda' think so.
BOY
Daddy, push me on the swings . . .
MAN
(as his boy grabs his hand)
Nice meeting you . . .
LAURA
Laura.
MAN
Nice meeting you, Laura.
Laura nods as the man hops off the bench and heads for the swings with his son. She smiles as she watches them leave. In the background, Nikki jumps from her swing and slowly makes her way to Laura. Laura's smile fades as she notices ANOTHER MAN hurrying suspiciously towards Nikki, reaching Nikki just as she passes the father and son.
OTHER MAN
Nikki?
Nikki startles and turns around. The man grabs Nikki as Laura bolts off the bench . . .
LAURA
STOP HIM! HE'S STEALING MY BABY!
The father jumps in shock, sees what's happening and tackles the abductor as he attempts to flee with Nikki. Laura's there instantly, snatching Nikki from the middle of the ruckus. The CAMERA stays with Laura, who clutches her wailing daughter in her arms and flees to her car. Once inside, she paws inside her purse for her keys . . .
NIKKI
(terrified)
HURRY, MOM!
EXT. PARK - WITH THE TWO MEN
The two men still grapple on the ground. The man manages to get his I.D. out of his coat pocket and waves it in front of the father . . .
MAN
I'M WITH THE F.B.I., YOU IDIOT!
She's the one stealing the kid!
The father releases the agent, who springs up and sprints across the lawn while stuffing his I.D. back in his coat.
INT. LAURA'S CAR
Nikki and Laura moan as Laura struggles to find her keys. Laura looks up. The agent's almost to the car . . .
LAURA
LOCK YOUR DOOR, NIKKI!
Nikki complies a second before the agent reaches her door and yanks on the handle. Laura smashes down her lock and hears something jingle. She dives her hand into her coat pocket and retrieves her prize, stuffing the keys in the ignition as the agent shouts and pounds at the window. When she fires up the engine the agent makes a frantic dash for his own car.
ANOTHER ANGLE - EXT. LAURA'S CAR
Laura peels out, getting a lead on the agent, whose car is parked further away. The agent at length reaches his car and tears away, determined to make up for lost time.
INT. LAURA'S CAR - ON THE RUN
Laura's body shakes with fear as she dashes down the street, searching for the quickest way out of town. Turning onto a main highway, Nikki suddenly finds her voice . . .
NIKKI
MY DOLL! Lauralee!
LAURA
We'll get you a new one! And new clothes . . .
(wiping away her tears)
And me a new car . . .
ANOTHER ANGLE - AT THE PARK
Derek's car pulls in front of the park, slowly following the park's length as Derek scans the crowd of faces. He drives to the end of the park and stops, sitting in silence. After several moments he reaches an emotional decision, pulls the car into traffic and heads for home.
